What do Chiropractors
like Dr. Gould do?
Chiropractors
locate interference in the nervous system using diagnostic tools such as the patient history, posture analysis, range
of motion, orthopedic tests, nerve reflexes, assessment of trigger points and muscular imbalances, x-ray, and analysis techniques
unique to chiropractic. They correct interference in the nervous system by using specific chiropractic adjustments leading
to better joint function, muscle balance, and nerve function. Many, like Dr. Gould, help patients achieve pain relief and
spinal correction through rehabilitation and therapeutic exercizes. Most importantly, they help the body to heal itself
from the inside out.
Why is the nervous system so important?
Your brain, spinal cord, and nerves coordinate and control every cell, tissue and organ in the body and adapt
them to their internal and external environment. If the nervous system is not responding properly, the body will not
perform at 100% as nature intended, which may result in reduced immmunity, pain, chemical imbalance, disease, stress or poor
metabolism. Chiropractic addresses the nervous system through the spinal cord and the nerves that extend from it.
What
is vertebral subluxation?
The word "subluxation" comes from the Latin words meaning "to dislocate" (luxate) and
"somewhat or slightly" (sub). A subluxation means a slight dislocation (misalignment) or biomechanical malfunctioning
of the vertebrae (bones of the spine). These disturbances may irritate nerve roots and blood vessels which branch off from
the spinal cord between each of the vertebrae. This irritation may cause pain and dysfunction in muscle, lymphatic and organ
tissue as well as imbalance in the normal body processes.
What causes a subluxation?
A fall, injury, sudden jar,
trauma, or sometimes an inherited spinal weakness can displace a vertebra. Other causes include improper sleeping conditions
or habits, poor posture, occupational hazards, incorrect lifting practices, obesity, lack of rest and exercise, and stress.
These disturbances may irritate nerve roots and blood vessels which branch off from the spinal cord between each of the vertebrae.

What
kind of technique does Dr. Gould practice?
Dr.
Gould excels at the safest and most well researched techniques in chiropractic: Chiropractic Biophysics (CBP) and The Pettibon
System. These techniques emphasize optimal posture and spinal alignment and correcting misalignments of the spine through
powerful but gentle adjustments. Long-term corrections of abnormal spinal postural distortions may also require
a force applied over a period of time, which can be achieved with the tractioning we provide for our patients. Others respond
to neuromuscular re-education through weight exercises as well as muscle and joint therapy through massage. We've seen
some amazing results from strengthening postural muscles and building endurance in addition to adjustments.
When can
someone start Chiropractic care?
They can start soon as they are born, or whenever they are ready. There are many ways the spine can
become injured throughout one's life: twisting of the neck during the birth process; falling while learning to walk
and while playing; sports injuries; carrying heavy backpacks, purses, and laptop computers; poor posture; driving; sitting
all day; inadequate exercise; gravity; pregnancy; carrying and lifting car seats and strollers; osteoporosis; emotional
stress; chemical interactions. It is never too early or too late to start chiropractic care; we are ready to help you when
you are ready.

Can
a person who had back surgery see a chiropractor?
Yes. It's an unfortunate fact that up to half of those who had
spinal surgery discover a return of their original symptoms months or years later; they then face the prospect of additional
surgery. Chiropractic may help prevent repeated back surgeries. In fact, if chiropractic care is initially utilized,
back surgery can often be avoided in the first place.
What if I'm Pregnant?

During
pregnancy, the body goes through a series of changes: rapid development, weight gain, hormonal changes and shifting of weight
bearing. These factors, combined with the laxity of corrective tissues, may cause a pregnant woman to experience low back
or leg pain. Besides helping to relieve the discomfort many expectant mothers experience, chiropractic care helps normalize
nervous system function. Dr. Gould is also skilled in the Webster Technique, well known for helping to turn breech babies
and helping the baby move down into the pelvis in preparation for birth.
The benefits of chiropractic
care may also be noticed during delivery. Many chiropractic patients report that their deliveries were faster and more comfortable
than deliveries previous to chiropractic care! Our office will take special precautions with you during your pregnancy.
Modifications to the table or adjusting techniques are made during each stage of pregnancy to keep the weight off your stomach
and keep you comfortable.
